Galactical Outpost

Rescue humanity into orbit

Year 2104. Earth is three degrees to hot. Despite the ambitious plans in the early 21st century, humanity has not managed to preserve a future on earth. The laziness of the people was enormous. As it got inconvenient, protests started, anarchy came and the world collapsed.

Only few states have survived, but there is still hope. In the sixties, a group of scientists, engineers and engaged people started a project to preserve humanity in space. The first station had to be abandoned in 2092.

After twelve years of excessive labour, you have thousand possibilities, even more volunteers and one mission: Build and sustain the “Hope Station”. Construct it based on necessity and need. Great design is efficent, sustainable and durable.

A (short) postmortem

I made this game for my application at the HTW Berlin… and they took me! On a serious note though, it has been a time (over 4 years) since I made this project and I would do many things different today which is a good thing because it shows that I learned stuff. I would do art different. It would still be programmer art but it would not hurt that much. I would use the engine in a completely different way, starting with the project structure which continues with the way data is handled to the actual programming. I would also not take so long to reimplement the systems. But most importantly, I would not reimplement them the way they are. For instance there is no moment to moment game feel. There is like six in game days worth of waiting, there is no real resource management because your control is very limited and to make the game playable I just throw more than enough resources at players. In short, this is a tech demo and I would make it a game prototype.

Also I would probably revisit the game’s theme and let it still be a space game and talk about climate but with a optimistic undertone. There is too much pessimism about everywhere. So it is what is. I think the saying is along the lines: You have to crap your way up.
